Overview
The African Union’s Agenda 2063, alongside the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16–25), highlights the importance of skills development for sustainable development, particularly among youth. Across the continent, universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges, and research institutions are beginning to embed sustainability into curricula, focusing on areas such as renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable agriculture. Circular economy and waste management are similarly expanding.
Despite growing awareness and policy ambition, several structural and practical challenges remain. Many formal education systems lack sufficient integration of green content, and there is a shortage of qualified instructors able to deliver modern, industry-aligned training. Private sector involvement is limited, reducing the relevance and sustainability of training programs. Gender inequalities and urban-rural disparities are persistent, with many training opportunities concentrated in cities, excluding rural populations and marginalizing women.
Project Goal
The Univerisities Joint Program in Circular Economy aims to strengthen Africa’s green skills ecosystem by preparing youth to become critical thinkers and change agents, capable of driving the continent’s transition to a circular economy .
Objectives
1. Integrate circular economy into higher education
Integrate circular economy into higher education by embedding sustainability, circular practices, and green skills into curricula at universities, faculties, and research institutions.
2. Develop practical and technical skills
Develop practical and technical skills by providing students with experiential learning opportunities, internships, and community-based projects to design and implement local circular solutions.
3. Generate local knowledge and research
Generate local knowledge and research by training students in research skills and creating circular economy knowledge tailored to African communities, practices, and local contexts.
4. Strengthen institutional capacity
Strengthen institutional capacity by leveraging universities’ capabilities, partnerships, and international relations to participate in the Continental Action Plan for the Circular Economy in Africa.
